Indonesia has suspended 190 coal and mineral mining licenses.
Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Yuliot Tanjung explained that the licenses were suspended because mining companies failed to restore the land after mining activities, in addition to extracting materials beyond the set quota.
According to an ANTARA media report, this decision was made based on a comprehensive assessment by the Directorate General of Minerals and Coal.
However, Yuliot and other ministry officials did not respond to Reuters for further comment.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto also vowed to crack down on illegal activities in the extraction of natural resources, including mining activities.
The amount of coal and mineral production affected by the suspension is still uncertain.
As of the end of 2024, Indonesia has more than 4,600 mining licenses.
