Qatar Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani will meet top US officials on Friday, with discussions expected to focus on the Israeli attack on Doha and the Gaza ceasefire talks.

The US State Department said on Thursday that Sheikh Mohammed will meet US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House.

US media outlets such as Politico and Axios also reported that he is expected to meet with President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance and special envoy Steve Witkoff.

The Israeli strike in Doha on Tuesday, which was aimed at killing a Hamas leader, has drawn global condemnation over fears it could further escalate tensions in the Middle East.

The UN Security Council on Thursday also condemned the attack, but did not mention Israel in a joint statement agreed by all 15 members, including the US.

Qatar has been a key mediator in efforts to broker a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, including talks on the release of hostages. Washington sees Qatar as a key ally in the Gulf.

President Trump on Tuesday insisted that the decision to attack Qatar was made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and not by the Republican leadership in the US. He added that Israel's unilateral action was not in the interests of America or Israel.

Since the Gaza conflict erupted in October 2023, tens of thousands of lives have been lost, while the population of Gaza faces widespread destruction and a famine.

Israel defended its action as a retaliatory strike against Hamas, but international rights experts have described the action as tantamount to genocide.
