The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) announced that as of September 30, a total of 5,149 public electric vehicle (EV) chargers have been installed nationwide.
In a written response on the Dewan Rakyat portal, MITI stated that of the total, 1,709 units are direct current (DC) chargers, while 3,440 units are alternating current (AC) chargers.
With a ratio of one public EV charger facility for every eight battery electric vehicles (BEVs), the number of public EV chargers available is now considered sufficient to accommodate the use of approximately 42,000 BEV units for passenger vehicles that have been registered to date.
According to MITI, although the total number of public EV chargers has not yet reached the target, the number of DC chargers has exceeded the target set, with an achievement of 114% of the target of 1,500 units.
The statement was made when MITI answered a question posed by Azli Yusof (PH-Shah Alam) regarding the number of EV chargers nationwide and the challenge of achieving the target of 10,000 units by the end of 2025.
In addition, DC-type chargers are more suitable for use by users who need fast charging, especially when traveling long distances or using highways.
This situation reflects the changing usage patterns among electric vehicle owners who are now increasingly inclined to use fast charging services.
The ministry also explained that the road tax exemption for BEVs will end on December 31, 2025, and the tax will begin to be imposed from January 1, 2026.
The tax rate has been adjusted according to the capacity of the electric motor (power output kW) and remains lower than the road tax rate for internal combustion engine-based vehicles.
