Echoing the issue in the Dewan Rakyat, DAP MP, RSN Rayer urged the government to take strict action against luxury car owners who evaded renewing their road tax, after it was revealed that thousands of luxury vehicles were still operating without valid tax.
According to data from the Ministry of Transport, there are more than 6,300 luxury cars nationwide that have failed to renew their road tax, involving arrears totaling RM35.7 million.
Among the brands involved are Porsche, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Ferrari and Lamborghini, with Porsche recording the highest number at 4,308 units worth RM13.75 million.
Transport Minister, Anthony Loke, revealed that some of the owners are from influential groups such as businessmen and celebrities.
However, he stressed that this revelation was not intended to embarrass individuals, but rather to warn them to obey the law.
He also explained that there are owners who are willing to wait for their vehicles to be seized because the RM300 compound is considered cheaper than the actual road tax.
The “Ops Luxury” operation conducted by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) over the past few months has seized more than 400 luxury vehicles that failed to renew their road tax.
Rayer stressed that such an attitude reflects social irresponsibility and is unfair to ordinary citizens who comply with paying taxes.
He also called for harsher penalties to be imposed, including suspending vehicle licenses and blacklisting defaulting owners from official government business.
