Malaysia has received official support from Brazil to become a full member of BRICS, said Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

In a press conference, Lula was asked if he wanted to see Malaysia fully join the economic bloc. He answered briefly but clearly that Malaysia had Brazil's support to become a full member of BRICS.

Malaysia's interest in BRICS was first voiced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in mid-2024, in line with the country's stance supporting a multipolar global system and more inclusive international governance.

Malaysia officially submitted an expression of interest in July 2024, before being accepted as a BRICS partner country on January 1, 2025 following the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan in October 2024. The decision was made when Russia held the chairmanship of the group.

In addition to Brazil, China also assured support for Malaysia's efforts to become a full member of BRICS.

According to Anwar, full participation will open up more space for Malaysia to play a greater role in the global economy and geopolitics.
