Google will invest $15 billion over the next five years to build data center capacity for its artificial intelligence (AI) hub in Andhra Pradesh, India.
The investment is one of the largest ever made by Google in the country.
Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said at an official event in New Delhi that it is the largest AI hub to receive investment outside the United States (US).
The 1 gigawatt data center campus belonging to the Alphabet Inc unit will be built in the city of Visakhapatnam, with an estimated investment of around $10 billion.
The move comes as competition heats up among global technology companies, which are investing heavily in building new data center infrastructure to meet the rapid demand for AI services.
Microsoft and Amazon are also investing billions of dollars in building data centers in India, a key growth market for the global tech giant with nearly a billion internet users.
Google's new data center will be the largest in Asia in terms of capacity and total investment, in line with Google's multi-billion dollar expansion of its portfolio in the region, including in Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore.
