Malaysia is expected to make progress in building its first nuclear power plant within seven years, in line with efforts to assess the country's readiness for the use of nuclear energy.
MyPower Corp Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Asdirhyme Abdul Rasib stated that the government has set targets under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), with MyPower currently conducting detailed studies before beginning the implementation phase and feasibility studies.
He also informed that MyPower has received an allocation of around RM28 million to conduct a comprehensive study covering the legal framework, financial modelling, technology selection and human capital development.
According to the 13MP, MyPower will manage the implementation of the nuclear energy programme in line with the standards set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The agency is also targeting the completion of the Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) assessment by the IAEA by 2027 as an important step towards the implementation of nuclear energy in the country.
Nuclear power is now back as part of the country's strategic energy plan, with the government aiming to include it in the national energy generation mix by 2031.
