Malaysia continues to strengthen its position as the main exporter of durian to China with total exports reaching 115,359 metric tons worth RM6.37 billion from 2018 to 2025.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), exports of durian pulp and paste began in 2018 with 3,555 metric tons worth RM202 million before Malaysia began exporting whole frozen durian to China in June 2019.
That year saw 3,177 metric tons of frozen durian worth RM143 million exported, while pulp and paste increased to 5,239 metric tons worth RM168 million.
Exports continued to increase in 2020 to 6,225 metric tons of frozen durian worth RM286 million, while the pulp and paste category recorded 3,456 metric tons worth RM171 million.
A year later, the volume of frozen durians doubled to 12,153 metric tonnes worth RM577 million, with pulp and paste also increasing to 5,895 metric tonnes worth RM368 million.
In 2022, frozen durian exports reached 13,401 metric tonnes worth RM1.27 billion, followed by 13,983 metric tonnes worth RM738 million in 2023, while pulp and paste exports jumped to 12,321 metric tonnes worth RM623 million.
Starting in August 2024, Malaysia began sending fresh durian to China in addition to continuing to export frozen durian and paste.
As of June 2025, fresh durian exports had increased to 773 metric tonnes worth almost RM50 million, with frozen durian at 3,599 metric tonnes (RM183 million) and pulp and paste at 5,241 metric tonnes (RM230 million).
KPKM stressed that it is committed to exploring new markets including Taiwan and Peru, with the target value of Malaysian durian exports expected to reach RM1.8 billion by 2030 involving 69,000 metric tonnes.
