Taiwan will develop a new layered air defense system called ‘T-Dome’.
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te said the move was taken to defend the country from enemy threats.
He also called on China to stop its violent actions to seize the island.
Taiwan is also determined to increase defense spending and submit a special budget for military spending by the end of this year.
The announcement came as Taiwan faces increasing military and political pressure from China, which considers the island part of its territory.
The development of the T-Dome will be accelerated to form a stronger air defense system with layered defense, high-level detection capabilities and effective interception.
According to media reports, the ‘T-Dome’ system is expected to operate like the Iron Dome system used by Israel.
Currently, Taiwan’s air defense system relies heavily on the US-made Patriot missiles and the domestically developed Sky Bow system.
However, China considers the Taiwanese leader a 'separatist' and rejects any offer of negotiations from him.
