Foreign ministers from the G7 group of countries gathered in southern Ontario, Canada, to discuss a range of key issues including defense spending, global trade and President Donald Trump's ceasefire plan in the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine.

Canada as host this time invited additional partners such as Australia, Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, South Korea, South Africa and Ukraine to demonstrate the scope of their increasingly broad cooperation.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a press statement that the talks focused on "the safety and security of the American people first", underlining Washington's priorities, especially on trade and maritime security issues.

However, divisions persist, with the issue of US trade tariffs against Canada and the implementation of Trump's ceasefire plan a point of contention between Washington and traditional allies such as Canada, which dispute unilateral measures.

The issue of the Ukraine war and the Gaza conflict also dominated the agenda.

The UK announced an additional £13 million to repair Ukraine's energy infrastructure ahead of the winter, while many countries are hoping the G7 will provide stronger support to Kyiv.

The two-day meeting is seen as important in signaling that despite tensions between the US and its allies, the G7 bloc is still seeking a common platform to address geopolitical crises and global trade uncertainties.
