The Kedah State Government is currently in the final stages of finalizing the appointment of a legal team to initiate legal action regarding the state's position with Penang.

The Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, announced that the move was made following a concern from the Sultan of Kedah, Al-Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah, who stressed the need for the issue to be clarified transparently, including involving the lease aspect.

He explained that the state government has appointed a research team consisting of historical and legal experts to conduct a comprehensive study on the matter.

The study was completed and the final report was presented to the State Councilors, State Assemblymen, and relevant Members of Parliament on April 15.

The state government is currently in the process of finalizing the appointment of lawyers to carry out analysis, prepare documents and take legal action in court. Sanusi also announced that further developments are expected to be announced within one to two months.

In 2021, the Kedah government demanded RM100 million in Penang lease royalty payments from the Federal Government after claiming the value had never been revalued since 1786.
