US President Donald Trump said that the government would pay a $2,000 (RM8,352) 'dividend' to most Americans, reported the German news agency (dpa).
In a post on the Truth Social platform yesterday, he explained that only high-income earners would be exempt, but did not mention the income level or the implementation period of the proposal.
Trump's post was made almost a week after the Democratic Party won several local and state elections across the US.
Among the successes of the Democratic Party were retaining the governorships of New Jersey and Virginia, and taking over the Georgia Utilities Commission seat that was previously controlled by Republicans.
Following the election, some members of Trump's party criticized him for allegedly not paying enough attention to his core supporters, who had previously promised a reduction in the cost of living during the campaign.
The inflation rate in the US remains high, around 3%, causing many citizens to complain about rising prices of goods.
However, many small businesses in the US have objected to the tariff policy, with some filing a lawsuit against the government in the Supreme Court last week.
Analysts have also expressed concerns about the impact of the artificial intelligence (AI) boom, the risk of mass layoffs, rising electricity costs, and high housing costs in cities like New York.
In the same tweet, Trump praised the state of the US economy, saying that the trade tariffs could generate “trillions of dollars” that could be used to start reducing the country’s huge debt.
Trump also described the US as “the richest and most respected country in the world,” while emphasizing that “there is almost no inflation and the stock market is at record highs.”
