Zohran Mamdani's victory as New York mayor marks the remarkable rise of a previously unknown politician.
Mamdani emerged from the local political scene with no big name, but he successfully led a high-profile campaign to win the highest office in a major US city.
Since winning the Democratic Party nomination in June, New Yorkers have become accustomed to seeing his face on television, and he also became the first Muslim to hold the office.
In the election, he successfully defeated independent candidate, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who received the support of US President Donald Trump, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
The 34-year-old politician was born in Uganda to an Indian-American family and moved to the US at the age of 7, before obtaining citizenship in 2018.
He is the son of renowned film director Mira Nair and Mahmood Mamdani, a respected professor and Africa expert.
Mamdani has also been labeled as a successful child due to his family's influence.
He began his education at the prestigious Bronx High School of Science, before continuing his studies at Bowdoin College in Maine, a university considered a bastion of progressive thought.
In addition to venturing into politics, Mamdani also distinguished himself in the rap world in 2015 with two artists of Indian descent using the stage name 'Young Cardamom'.
However, he did not last long in the music world after being called a 'second-rate artist'.
His interest in politics was sparked when he learned that rapper Himanshu Suri (Heems) was supporting a city council candidate. Mamdani then joined the campaign as an activist.
In 2018, he was elected as a representative from Queens, an area inhabited by ethnic minorities and low-income residents.
