Google will purchase electricity from a solar project being developed in Gurun, Kedah by a consortium led by Japan-based renewable energy developer Shizen Energy Group.
Shizen Energy announced that the 29.99 megawatt utility-scale solar project has achieved financial close thanks to financing provided by United Overseas Bank (UOB).
The project is scheduled to begin commercial operations in 2027.
Malaysia is seen as a key strategic market by Shizen Energy, in line with the company's plans to further strengthen its position and expand its presence in the Southeast Asia region.
In a related development, UOB Malaysia is acting as the mandatory lead arranger and sole lender for the project's financing facility. Shizen Energy also announced that the implementation of this project will involve the collaboration of local and regional partners.
The company also stressed that the success in achieving financial close reflects the strength of its collaboration with strategic partners such as Solarvest and HSS, in addition to the continuous support from government agencies and state authorities throughout the project development process.
To date, Shizen Energy's cumulative installed capacity in Malaysia has reached approximately 60 megawatts, encompassing rooftop solar projects for corporate clients including Top Glove Corporation Bhd as well as major mushroom producer, Hokto Malaysia Sdn Bhd.
