Just got back from Singapore, and I couldn’t resist testing Malaysia's hottest travel debit cards head-to-head. The contenders? Right Bank, Touch ‘n Go Visa, and Wise Card.
We used all three for real transactions – ATM withdrawals, MRT rides, and dining – to find out which card truly gives the best bang for your buck. Spoiler alert: the results might surprise you! 😲
Meet the Contenders
1. Right Bank
A new digital bank powered by YTL and Coney. Supports Visa for overseas payments, offers 1.2% cashback on most transactions abroad, and tops up instantly from your bank. No minimum spend, easy to use locally or overseas.
2. Touch ‘n Go Visa
Linked to your Touch ‘n Go e-wallet. 0.5% cashback on regular spending and up to 3% cashback for transactions above RM300. Convenient, but has some activation quirks if you forget your PIN.
3. Wise Card
The king of multi-currency travel cards. Hold multiple currencies, convert money in advance, and use the mid-market FX rate. Some manual top-ups required, but great for locking in favorable exchange rates.
The Tests
We ran three challenges:
ATM Withdrawal – We withdrew 20 SGD each. Wise came out on top here, despite the small $5 fee, thanks to its better FX rate.
MRT Rides – Right Bank won this round with 1.2% cashback on public transport, credited a few days later. Touch ‘n Go didn’t give any cashback here.
Food & Dining – We grabbed dinner at Shake Shack, paying with all three cards. Right Bank was the winner again, giving 1.2% cashback, while Touch ‘n Go offered only 0.5% (unless you spend above RM300). Wise lagged behind.
User Experience Matters
Right Bank: Smoothest experience, no setup issues. Instant use upon arrival.
Touch ‘n Go Visa: Activation required PIN from the physical card letter – a bit inconvenient if you forget it at home.
Wise: Manual top-ups needed; best if you monitor FX rates before travel.
Who Wins Overall? 🏆
It depends on your spending style:
Big shoppers (RM300+ per purchase): Touch ‘n Go wins.
Average traveler (transport, meals, small purchases): Right Bank delivers the best FX + cashback combo.
Cash planners who like to lock in FX rates: Wise is your go-to.
For most Malaysians traveling like me, Right Bank comes out on top – smooth, convenient, and rewarding!
💡 Pro Tip: Right Bank is also running a travel challenge! Post a Reel or TikTok showing how far your card has traveled, and you could win a stay at Panolo Resort or high tea at Ritz Carlton. Promo runs until 31st December 2025.
