US social media company Reddit Inc has filed a lawsuit urging the High Court to overturn an Australian decision that banned individuals under the age of 16 from using social media.
The media operator described the law as a violation of freedom of expression in a political context.
Australia enacted a law setting a minimum age for accessing social media two days ago, making it the first country in the world to do so.
Reddit and nine other platforms including Meta's Instagram, Alphabet's YouTube, and TikTok had resisted the move for more than a year, but finally said they would comply.
The platforms were required to block underage users or face a $49.5 million fine, while minors and their guardians will not be subject to any penalties.
The platforms insisted they would comply with the rules using methods such as age determination based on facts, online activity, and age estimation through selfies.
