US President Donald Trump yesterday ordered the US military to launch airstrikes against the ISIS terrorist group in Nigeria.
The order was implemented after Trump accused the group of persecuting Christians in the country.
Through a post on social media, he ordered strict action against ISIS members in northwest Nigeria who were accused of killing innocent Christians.
The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) explained that the attack was launched in Sokoto state near the Niger border in cooperation with Nigerian authorities.
The operation reportedly destroyed the terrorist camp, and resulted in the deaths of a large number of ISIS members.
The Nigerian Foreign Ministry confirmed cooperation with the US in launching airstrikes against the terrorists.
The Nigerian government also reiterated its commitment to protecting the fundamental rights of all citizens regardless of religious or ethnic background.
At the same time, Trump has paid attention to the plight of Christians in Nigeria over the past few months and stressed that the US will not hesitate to take strict action to protect the population of believers.
This military action follows Trump's previous accusations that Nigeria is violating religious freedom, claiming that Christians there are facing an 'existential threat.'
