President Donald Trump said that the new Federal Reserve chair candidates will be judged on their willingness to cut interest rates quickly. This was seen as a clear message about the direction of monetary policy he wants. Trump also criticized the current Fed Chair, Jerome Powell, and insisted that he should have cut rates faster.

Trump's statement gave a clear picture of the Fed chair candidates, including Kevin Hassett, Christopher Waller, Michelle Bowman and Rick Rieder. Hassett, is now considered a leading candidate who previously said the Fed should cut rates now.

Powell is expected to announce a 25 basis point rate cut this week, but Trump reiterated his call for rates to be lowered below 2%, far below current levels. Powell's term as Fed chair ends in 2026, but he will remain on the Fed board until 2028.

Trump said he has made a decision on Powell's successor, and may delay the announcement until early next year.

Trump's comments highlighted the possibility of a more dovish monetary policy shift, as well as increased political interference in Fed policy should his nominee lead the central bank.
