If I had RM10 million today…
Would I buy a fancy car? A huge mansion? Maybe a luxury watch?
Twenty years ago, that was my mindset—and I’m guessing it’s what most people think too. But after working as a financial advisor and chatting with countless wealthy individuals, I’ve learned that not all spending is created equal.
Now that I’m in my 40s, I realize that some purchases give only short-term pleasure, while others have a long-lasting impact on your life. Today, I want to share the five luxury purchases I’d happily make.
Welcome to Finance Talks. Let’s dive in.
1️⃣ Buy Time
And no, I don’t mean a luxury watch. I mean buying back your time—spending money on things you hate doing so you can focus on what you love.
For example:
I budget RM400/month for a helper who comes twice a week to tidy the house. My wife and I just don’t have the time for it.
I order dinner through catering almost every night because cooking takes time we don’t have.
Here’s a tip: To figure out if it’s worth buying time, ask yourself:
“Is the cost of paying someone less than the value of my time?”
Example: If a service saves you 2 hours per week and costs RM80, could you earn RM200 in those 2 hours instead? Then yes—buying that time is a no-brainer.
2️⃣ Health
Health is priceless. When you’re healthy, life is longer and better. That’s why investing in wellness and insurance is always worth it.
Gym memberships, quality food, regular check-ups… all these are long-term investments in your life quality.
While you’re healthy, get insurance. It’s cheaper now than waiting until later.
Seriously, spending on health is a luxury worth having—don’t wait until your body forces you to.
3️⃣ Things That Support Your Body
I’m talking everyday essentials—shoes, chairs, beds. These are items your body interacts with daily for years.
Take a bed, for instance:
Sleep poorly, and everything else suffers—energy, focus, mood.
A good bed is worth paying for. Even RM10,000? Absolutely, if it improves your quality of life.
4️⃣ Dream Home
If you can afford it, your home is one of the most rewarding luxury purchases. But let’s reframe “dream home”:
It’s not about size or price—it’s about the life experience it gives you.
For example, I live in a 1,100 sq. ft. condo in PJ. Not huge, but centrally located and convenient, making life easier every day. My wife loves it because it’s easy to maintain, and our kid enjoys a comfortable space without unnecessary fuss.
The key? Your home should enhance your life, not just inflate your expenses.
5️⃣ Experiences & Learning
Finally, the most valuable luxury? Experiences—your own and others’.
Traveling with intention opens your mind and broadens your perspective. But it’s not about expensive trips for Instagram pics.
Quality experiences with the people you love—like exploring a local market abroad with your spouse—create memories that last a lifetime.
And don’t forget learning from others:
Pay for courses, mentors, or expert guidance. Trying to do everything alone can cost years of trial and error.
As the saying goes, “Pay for someone else’s experience to save your own time.”
The Secret Behind Smart Spending
In short, the purchases worth your money are the ones that:
Give you more time
Improve your health
Support your daily comfort
Enhance your life experiences
Teach you skills or knowledge
Luxury isn’t just about status—it’s about value that improves your life, not complicates it.
