The European Commission has opened an investigation into Elon Musk's X platform following a case involving his artificial intelligence (AI) application, Grok, which was used to produce sexually explicit images of real people.

The move follows a similar announcement in early January by the United Kingdom (UK) watchdog, Ofcom.

If the website is found to be in breach of European Union (EU) rules under the Digital Services Act, the commission could fine the company up to 6% of its global annual turnover.

In a statement from X's security account earlier, the social media platform claimed to have blocked Grok from digitally altering people's photos to produce illegal nude images.

A member of the European Parliament, Regina Doherty, stated that the commission would assess whether manipulated pornographic images were being displayed to users in Europe.

Meanwhile, activists and victims involved in the immoral case described the ability to produce such pornographic images as something that should not be allowed to happen at all.

Before the commission's announcement, Musk posted a picture on X that appeared to downplay the new restrictions on his app.

At the same time, investigations into Grok were also underway in Australia, France and Germany.

The app was temporarily banned in Malaysia and Indonesia, but those bans have now been lifted.
