EU ‘Presses the Brakes’ on Tariff War, Postpones €93 Billion Retaliatory Package Against US!

The European Commission plans to extend the suspension of the package as the EU’s trade retaliation against the US worth €93 billion for another six months.

The package was supposed to enter into force on February 7 if not extended, but remains suspended following the EU-US joint trade agreement in August 2025. The countermeasures were originally prepared when trade negotiations between the EU and the US were still ongoing last year.

President Donald Trump’s threat of new tariffs on several European countries has made the package an instrument of pressure if trade tensions escalate.

However, the withdrawal of the tariff threat by the US opens up space for the EU to refocus on implementing bilateral trade cooperation.

The Commission stressed that even if the countermeasures are suspended, the EU can still reactivate them in the future if the situation requires it.
