Eight top European leaders have gathered to defend the autonomous Danish territory of Greenland following the increasing threat from the Administration of US President (US), Donald Trump, who wants to take over the island.

In a joint statement, the European leaders stressed that the security of Greenland must be guaranteed collectively by NATO with full responsibility for the aspirations of its people.

They also stressed that European allies are now increasing their efforts in terms of investment activities to ensure that the Arctic region is safe from any enemy threats, given that the Danish and Greenland governments are part of NATO.

The statement was signed by Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, French President, Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (UK), Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni and Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk.

It also received support from the leaders of the Netherlands, Greece, Luxembourg and Slovenia.

Belgian Prime Minister, Bart De Wever, also expressed support for Frederiksen's call for sovereignty among NATO allies to always be respected.

In a post on social media, Wever said Europe would be a stronger ally when it works together rather than divided.

Meanwhile, the Greenland government yesterday requested an urgent meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to discuss the issue of claims to Greenland.

Meanwhile, Frederiksen met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to discuss security issues in the Arctic.

She also expressed her gratitude to Canada for its strong support for Denmark in dealing with the current situation.
