The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has taken action to temporarily block access to Grok in Malaysia following the misuse of artificial intelligence technology to produce indecent and harmful content, including involving women and children.

MCMC has temporarily blocked the use of Grok, an artificial intelligence (AI) application, in Malaysia starting January 11. This ban was made because Grok is often misused to produce pornographic and immoral content.

MCMC found that there was very extreme content, including fake photos and images (deepfake) produced without permission, involving women and children. This happened despite MCMC having warned and instructed the companies that own Grok, namely X Corp and xAI LLC, to take stricter security measures.

However, the actions taken by the companies are considered insufficient because they only rely on user reports and do not control the problems caused by the AI system itself. Therefore, MCMC decided to temporarily block Grok to protect the public.

This restriction will continue until more effective security measures are implemented, especially to prevent the dissemination of content that is harmful to women and children. MCMC is also prepared to discuss with the companies if they comply with Malaysian laws.

The public is advised to immediately report any harmful content to MCMC or the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM).
