New Obstacle? Senator Tillis Rejects Fed Chair Nominee

Senator Thom Tillis said Friday he will oppose President Donald Trump’s nomination of Kevin Warsh as Federal Reserve chairman until the federal criminal investigation into current chairman Jerome Powell is fully resolved.

Tillis, a North Carolina Republican, had previously vowed in January to oppose any new Fed nominee until the Justice Department’s controversial investigation into Powell is concluded.

“Kevin Warsh is a qualified candidate with a deep understanding of monetary policy,” Tillis said in a post on social media platform X.

“However, the Justice Department should proceed with a criminal investigation of Chairman Jerome Powell based on committee testimony that no reasonable person could interpret as criminal intent. Protecting the Federal Reserve’s independence from political interference or legal intimidation is uncompromising,” Tillis said.

“My position remains unchanged: I will oppose the confirmation of any Federal Reserve nominee, including for the position of Chairman, until the DOJ investigation into Chairman Powell is fully and transparently resolved.”
