United States (US) President Donald Trump announced that countries found to be conducting trade activities with Iran will be subject to a 25% tariff.
The move risks affecting the world's largest economies such as China and India.
In a post on Truth Social yesterday, Trump stated that the tariffs would be applied immediately to any country doing business with the Islamic republic.
The announcement was made a day after Trump revealed that he was considering military operations in Iran.
He also warned that Tehran had crossed a 'red line' following the increasing death toll due to the authorities' crackdown on protests across the country.
According to Trade Data Monitor data, more than 100 of Iran's trading partners in the first half of 2025 are likely to be affected.
Among Iran's largest trading partners identified are China, Turkey, India and Pakistan.
However, the economic sanctions imposed by the US on Tehran have actually limited Iran's trade relations with most other countries.
Meanwhile, the White House declined to provide further details on the implementation mechanism of Trump's proposed tariffs on Iran's trading partners.
