Ayatollah Alireza Arafi has been appointed as a member of Iran's Interim Leadership Council following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
According to the Iranian constitution, the vacancy of the Supreme Leader will be temporarily filled by a three-member council that takes over the functions of the country's leadership until a permanent successor is selected by the Assembly of Experts.
Arafi, who is also a member of the Guardian Council, will join Masoud Pezeshkian and Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei in the interim council to ensure the continuity of the country's administration.
At the same time, Iran announced a 40-day official mourning period as a mark of respect for the country's supreme leader's passing. During that period, several official events and large-scale celebrations are expected to be postponed or canceled.
The interim appointment is intended to ensure political stability during a sensitive transition period, while the formal process of selecting a new Supreme Leader continues in accordance with constitutional provisions.
