The global oil supply has been on a rollercoaster. Prices once hit over $100 per barrel, jumping nearly 50% in just a few weeks. Now, neighboring countries are feeling the heat, racing to secure fuel supplies. Gas stations are shutting down, tanks are running dry, and people are lining up for hours.
Take the Philippines, for example. The president has officially declared an energy emergency as more than 400 gas stations have run out of fuel. Their reserves are down to just 45 days of supply. It’s the first country in the world to declare an oil crisis emergency in recent times.
Thailand isn’t far behind. Panic has set in there too. Thousands of gas stations nationwide are running low. Daily demand has spiked from 67 million liters to 84 million liters, exceeding their production capacity. Even though officials claim Thailand still has roughly 100 days of fuel, logistics issues and panic buying are slowing down deliveries.
So, what about Malaysia? Are we at risk?
Good news: Malaysia’s fuel supply is still stable.
Datuk Armizan, Malaysia’s Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, confirmed that petrol, diesel, and LPG are sufficient. There are minor logistics delays here and there, but nothing major.
Why is Malaysia holding steady while our neighbors struggle?
- Malaysia produces oil. Unlike some countries that rely entirely on imports, we have domestic production. True, our output is still lower than local consumption, so we import fuel—but having a production base helps.
- Safe shipping routes. Despite tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, Malaysia is among the five countries with secure oil passage agreements with Iran, allowing uninterrupted deliveries.
- Fuel subsidies. The government is still heavily subsidizing fuel. RON 95 petrol costs RM1.99 per liter at the pump, even though its real cost is about RM3.90. That’s RM2 billion per month in subsidies—RM24 billion a year! These efforts keep prices affordable and prevent panic.
So, while the regional oil situation is tense, Malaysia is relatively safe for now. Stay informed, don’t panic, and share this information with friends who might be worried about fuel supplies.
