US President Donald Trump announced that the leaders of Israel and Lebanon are expected to hold talks for the first time in 34 years.

The development comes after rare talks between representatives of the two sides in Washington to defuse the escalating conflict.

Tensions have risen after Lebanon was dragged into a conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, with Hezbollah once again launching attacks on Israel.

The situation has seen Israel's military operations become increasingly aggressive, including air strikes and ground incursions into southern Lebanon.

Since the conflict broke out, more than 2,000 people have been reported killed and around 1.2 million people have been displaced. The Israeli army has also expanded operations to control strategic areas and create a buffer zone along the border.

At the same time, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stressed that military operations will continue despite the ongoing talks.

The Lebanese government is trying to achieve a ceasefire and ensure the withdrawal of Israeli troops, but the humanitarian situation remains critical with millions of residents still unable to return to their homes.
