Indonesia and the United States are currently discussing a proposal to grant US military aircraft access to use Indonesian airspace. The discussions are still at an early stage and no formal agreement has been reached.

Previous media reports stated that the United States had requested overnight access for its military aircraft, and there were even claims that Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto had approved the proposal.

However, the Indonesian Ministry of Defense denied the matter and explained that no final approval had been given so far.

According to an official statement, the two countries were only discussing an initial draft in the form of a ‘Letter of Intent’. The document is still in the internal discussion stage and is not final or binding.

The ministry also stressed that full control over Indonesian airspace remains under the sovereignty of the country.

Any form of cooperation with foreign countries will ensure that national interests are protected and comply with Indonesian laws.

In a related development, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is scheduled to meet with his Indonesian counterpart Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin.

This meeting is expected to be an important platform in continuing discussions between the two sides.
