Electric Lorries as Initiative to Reduce Subsidy Burden?

The government is ready to offer incentives to encourage transport operators to switch to green technology for the sake of the country's economic sustainability.

Just imagine our highways, which are usually noisy with the roar of diesel engines, now becoming quieter and cleaner. Have you ever thought about how much the country is spending just to maintain diesel subsidies that continue to soar every year?

Transport Minister Anthony Loke revealed that his ministry will present specific proposals at the EV Special Task Force meeting next week. This move is not just to pursue the zero carbon target by 2050 but also to save the government's costs.

However, the reality is not as easy as it seems because the price of an electric lorry can reach two to three times that of a regular diesel lorry. This huge price gap is the main barrier that makes many transport operators still feel hesitant.

Long Distance Travel and Infrastructure Dilemma

For operations in urban areas such as the Klang Valley, there may be no big problem in charging the battery. However, imagine a lorry that needs to cross the state from Kedah to Johor with a distance of almost 900 kilometers when the battery power only lasts halfway.

The government has chosen a more sustainable approach, namely by providing incentives or a ‘carrot approach’ rather than forcing the industry hard. Tax exemptions and ecosystem facilities are being refined so that this transition does not burden the pockets of local logistics company owners.

In addition to the electric lorry issue, the ministry is also studying the framework for autonomous vehicle testing in Malaysia. The main focus is to find suitable test areas to ensure safety aspects are maintained in the event of an accident involving driverless technology.

Impact on Your Cost of Living

If this transition is successful, the burden of heavy diesel subsidies can be reduced and the funds can be channeled to other developments. For readers, the long-term impact is the stability of logistics product prices and a healthier environment for future generations.
