Political pressure on United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer is increasing as more than 70 Labour Party MPs are reportedly calling for him to resign following the party's poor performance in recent local and regional elections.

Although Starmer vowed to continue defending his leadership and rejected calls to step down, some Labour MPs are beginning to question his credibility in leading the party.

The situation has become more tense when several government aides have chosen to resign and publicly withdraw support for his leadership.

Criticism of Starmer is escalating as some party leaders claim he has failed to restore public confidence, in addition to failing to address key issues such as economic growth and the cost of living that continue to burden the British people.

According to Labour Party rules, a leadership challenge can only take place if it receives the support of at least 81 MPs. However, such a move is seen as risking triggering internal divisions between the left and right of the party.

Starmer took office as Prime Minister in July 2024 after a landslide victory for Labour, ending 14 years of Conservative rule. However, since then, his administration has faced a series of policy controversies and political pressures that have increasingly weakened the party's internal support.

His position has also been undermined after Labour suffered heavy defeats in local elections, including losing control of Wales to Plaid Cymru for the first time since 1999, as well as failing to challenge the Scottish National Party in Scotland.

In an effort to ease the pressure, Starmer has promised to introduce bigger measures involving economic growth, closer ties with Europe and energy sector reform. He has also reportedly wanted to take full control of British Steel as part of the country's industrial recovery plan.

At the same time, he has also increased criticism of Brexit, saying the decision to leave the European Union has made Britain weaker economically and security-wise.

Although several names such as Wes Streeting and Angela Rayner have been mentioned as potential challengers, the lack of a truly strong successor is seen as still giving Starmer room to survive for now.
