Since the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan, Astro Malaysia has been the main broadcaster of the FIFA World Cup in Malaysia. However, after 24 years, the broadcasting rights for the 2026 edition of the tournament will be broadcast exclusively by Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) and Unifi TV. The collaboration between the government and the private sector reflects a change in the economic model of the local sports broadcasting industry.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the government has allocated RM24 million for the 2026 World Cup broadcast, while several major sponsors are being finalized to help cover the overall cost. All 104 matches will be available to watch via RTM, RTM Klik and the Unifi TV digital platform to ensure wider access to Malaysians starting on June 11.
Astro explained that the cost of international sports broadcasting rights is now increasing due to global inflation and rising broadcast rights prices. The company also stated that digital piracy activities affect the commercial value of exclusive rights and make it difficult for media companies to get a balanced return on investment for major events such as the World Cup.
Pioneer of High Definition Sports Broadcasting in Malaysia
During its time as the main broadcaster of the World Cup, Astro played a key role in the development of local sports broadcasting technology. The company was among the pioneers of high definition (HD) broadcasting for major sporting events in Malaysia through the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
Viewers were also introduced to multi-channel broadcasting and a wider choice of commentary languages. Users can select specific channels for specific matches including commentary in Malay, English as well as original stadium audio.
In terms of local production, Astro has developed a modern sports studio with live analysis, interactive graphics and special content throughout major tournaments. The company has also produced many local commentators, hosts and sports production staff who have helped raise the standard of sports broadcasting in Malaysia.
Astro is currently in talks with broadcasting rights holders to bring several highlight matches to the Astro, NJOI and Sooka platforms for local viewers.
