The atmosphere in the Middle East is once again heated. Despite previous rumors of a ceasefire, the United States (US) has reportedly launched retaliatory attacks on military targets in Iran.
The latest tension erupted after Iran allegedly attacked three US Navy destroyers sailing in the Strait of Hormuz. This incident is feared to cancel the peace efforts being made by both sides to end the war that is now entering its third month.
“Just a Touch of Love” – Trump
President Donald Trump issued a strong warning to Tehran via social media. He stressed that the US will not hesitate to act more harshly if Iran continues to delay a peace agreement.
In a telephone interview with ABC News, Trump cynically described the US retaliatory attacks as just a “love tap”, but he told reporters in Washington that the US’s patience with Iran is now at an end.
Strait of Hormuz Becomes a Bet, Oil Prices ‘Crazy’
A report from the US Central Command Headquarters confirmed that Iran used various missiles, drones, and small boats in the attack. However, no US assets were reported to be affected.
In response, the US military destroyed Iranian drone launch sites, control centers, and military intelligence centers. News of this unrest continues to affect the economy:
Stock Market: Stock indices fell sharply as investors worried that a peace deal would fail.
Oil Prices: World crude oil prices fluctuated sharply (whipsaw) due to uncertainties in the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil route in the world.
“Project Freedom” Offer & Domestic Pressure
Trump is now in a desperate situation to end this conflict. In addition to the pressure of the US by-elections, he is also scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on May 14-15. China, as a major oil importer, is greatly affected by this global energy crisis.
Washington has sent a brief memo to Iran offering:
Reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
End the blockade of Iranian ports.
In exchange, the US wants tighter controls on Iran's nuclear program and uranium stockpiles. Iran is expected to respond through Pakistan (as a mediator) in the next two days.
Will Iran bow to Trump's demands to end the global energy crisis, or will this "touch of love" turn into a bigger, more devastating war? Let's all wait and see what Tehran says in the next 48 hours.
