When floods hit, most people think about damaged homes, blocked roads, and displaced families.
But there’s one hidden crisis that rarely gets attention — fish farming.
For farmers raising fish in cages (especially patin fish), floods can turn into a nightmare almost overnight.
The danger starts with strong currents.
If the cages aren’t secured tightly to the riverbank, they can snap, drift away, or completely break apart. Imagine months of hard work… gone in seconds. Fish escape, cages disappear, and losses pile up fast.
And that’s just the beginning.
During floods, water conditions change drastically. The river becomes murky, unstable, and low in oxygen. When oxygen levels drop, fish become weak, stressed — and many don’t survive.
Then comes the post-flood phase, which can be even worse.
Floodwater doesn’t just come from the river — it carries everything from land:
dirt, waste, bacteria, and pollutants. This creates what locals sometimes call “acidic water” — poor-quality water that can damage fish skin, spread disease, and ruin their market value.
Even if the fish are still alive, they may no longer be suitable for sale in premium condition.
For fish farmers, flood season means:
- Sleepless nights
- Constant monitoring of water levels
- Adjusting cage ropes again and again
- Always being on alert as water rises and falls rapidly
One mistake — and everything is gone.
In places like Temerloh along the Pahang River, floodwaters can rise up to 15 feet or more, completely transforming the landscape. Farmers must constantly adapt — pulling cages closer during strong currents, releasing them when water recedes.
Interestingly, many farmers still prefer flood season over drought.
Why?
Because drought can be even worse — no water at all. Some shallow farming areas dry up completely, wiping out entire operations.
At least during floods, there’s still water… even if it comes with serious risks.
This is the reality behind the fish you eat — a story of resilience, survival, and constant uncertainty.
