What if one of the greatest anime ever created wasn't just about Titans?
What if many of the events, characters, and conflicts in Attack on Titan were inspired by real-world history—especially World War II?
Fans have spent years uncovering hidden references inside the series, and some of the similarities are surprisingly convincing.
1. Erwin Smith and the Legendary German Commander
One of the most obvious parallels is between Erwin Smith and Erwin Rommel.
Rommel was one of Germany's most respected military commanders during WWII and earned the nickname "The Desert Fox" for his brilliant campaigns in North Africa. Despite commanding a smaller force, he repeatedly challenged larger British armies and pushed them deep into Egypt.
Sound familiar?
In Attack on Titan, Erwin Smith leads the Survey Corps, a small military force constantly facing overwhelming numbers of Titans. Against impossible odds, they continue pushing forward beyond the walls.
Even their focus on mobility mirrors real history. While Rommel relied heavily on tanks and fast-moving vehicles, the Survey Corps used horses to rapidly maneuver across Titan territory.
2. The Accusation of Treason
Another fascinating similarity involves both Erwins being accused of betraying their governments.
In Attack on Titan, Erwin Smith is arrested and accused of plotting against the ruling authorities.
Historically, Erwin Rommel became linked to the failed July 20 Plot against Adolf Hitler. Although his exact involvement remains debated by historians, the Nazi regime accused him of participating in the conspiracy.
To protect his family from punishment, Rommel was forced to take his own life on October 14, 1944.
Here's the eerie part: October 14 is also Erwin Smith's birthday in the Attack on Titan universe.
Coincidence? Maybe. But fans love pointing it out.
3. Liberio and the Jewish Ghettos of WWII
One of the strongest historical inspirations appears in Liberio.
The Eldians living in Liberio are confined behind walls, monitored by authorities, and treated as second-class citizens under Marleyan rule.
This bears a striking resemblance to the Jewish ghettos established by Nazi Germany during World War II, particularly the famous Warsaw Ghetto in occupied Poland.
Perhaps the most obvious visual reference is the armband.
Eldians are required to wear identifying armbands so Marleyans can instantly recognize them. During WWII, Jews in Nazi-controlled territories were forced to wear identifying symbols, including the Star of David.
4. Are Eldians Really Based on Jewish People?
The answer isn't that simple.
While there are clear similarities, there are also major differences.
Unlike Jews under Nazi Germany, Eldians in Marley are allowed to serve in the military and can potentially gain better treatment through military service.
This actually resembles another historical example: Korea under Japanese rule.
After Japan annexed Korea in 1910, many Koreans faced discrimination despite being part of the Japanese Empire. Some sought social advancement by serving the Japanese military and supporting the empire's war efforts.
Many historians and fans believe Hajime Isayama may have drawn inspiration from multiple historical events rather than a single group.
5. The Titan Assault That Mirrors a Real Military Operation
One of the most memorable scenes in Attack on Titan is the attack on Fort Slava.
Titans literally fall from the sky and overwhelm enemy defenses.
This scene closely resembles Germany's assault on the Belgian fortress Eben-Emael in 1940.
German airborne troops launched a daring surprise attack using gliders, landing directly on top of the fortress and capturing what was considered one of Europe's strongest defensive positions.
Different weapons.
Different era.
But the strategy of a sudden aerial assault is remarkably similar.
History Hidden Inside Anime
What makes Attack on Titan so fascinating is that it isn't simply an action anime. Beneath the Titans, battles, and mysteries lies a world influenced by real history, politics, war, nationalism, discrimination, and human conflict.
Whether these references were intentional inspirations or creative coincidences, they add another layer of depth that keeps fans discussing the series years after it ended.
