For centuries, Muslims around the world have been taught that the first revelation sent to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was the command:
"Iqra" — Read.
But what if the meaning goes far deeper than simply reading words on a page?

The Question That Changes Everything
When Angel Jibril (Gabriel) first delivered the revelation, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) famously responded:
"Ma ana biqari."
Traditionally, this has been translated as:
"I cannot read."
However, some scholars suggest another possible understanding:
"What am I supposed to read?"
This subtle difference opens the door to a much deeper interpretation of what "Iqra" truly means.
Is "Iqra" More Than Reading?
In Arabic, the root word "Qara'a" carries meanings beyond reading written text.
It can also mean:
- Gathering information
- Connecting ideas
- Building understanding
- Creating meaning from knowledge
Think about it.
When we read, we are not merely looking at letters. We are collecting symbols, forming words, building sentences, and ultimately constructing meaning.
In this sense, "Iqra" is not simply a command to read.

A Revelation Ahead of Its Time
The first verses also mention:
"Who created man from a clinging substance."
Today, with modern science, ultrasound technology, MRI scans, and advanced medical research, we can better understand the stages of human development in the womb.
But imagine living 1,400 years ago.
No microscopes.
No medical imaging.
No modern biology.
How would people have understood these descriptions?
Remarkably, many classical scholars showed intellectual humility. Instead of forcing explanations that lacked evidence, they often acknowledged that some meanings would become clearer with future discoveries.
This approach allowed future generations to explore deeper scientific understanding without contradicting the Quran.
The Relationship Between Science and Faith
One of the biggest misconceptions today is the idea that science and religion are enemies.
The opening revelation tells a different story.
The Quran not only commands humanity to seek knowledge but also highlights learning, discovery, observation, and the use of tools that preserve knowledge.
Allah says He taught humanity "by the pen."
The pen represents documentation, education, communication, and the transfer of knowledge across generations.
Without it, civilization itself would not exist.
Are We Facing a New Age of Ignorance?
Today we live in a world overflowing with information.
Yet many people feel more confused than ever.
