For generations, Muslims have heard narrations about a shocking event that will take place near the end of time: the destruction of the Kaaba.
But does this mean the holy sanctuary in Makkah will one day be demolished? And if so, doesn't that contradict the Quranic promise that Makkah is a place of peace and security?
Let's explore what Islamic scholars have explained about this fascinating and often misunderstood topic.
The Hadith About the Destruction of the Kaaba
Authentic narrations recorded in the collections of Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim mention that the Kaaba will eventually be destroyed by a man from Abyssinia (Habashah), described as having thin legs.
This hadith has been discussed extensively by great scholars throughout Islamic history, including Imam Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani and Imam al-Nawawi.
The question many people ask is:
How can the Kaaba be destroyed if Allah has promised protection and security for Makkah?
Does This Contradict the Quran?
The short answer is: No.
Scholars generally provide two explanations.
1. Makkah Is a Place of Peace — But Not Every Moment in History
When the Quran describes Makkah as a secure and peaceful place, it refers to its overall status and divine protection.
However, this does not mean that no conflict or hardship can ever occur there.
History itself provides examples:
- The attack of Abraha and the Army of the Elephant before the birth of Prophet Muhammad ï·º.
- Battles that occurred in Makkah after the Prophet's passing.
- Floods and natural disasters that affected the Kaaba throughout history.
Despite these events, Makkah has remained a uniquely protected and sacred place in the broader sense intended by the Quran.
2. The Destruction Happens After the Believers Are Gone
Many scholars, including Imam Ibn Hajar, explained that the destruction of the Kaaba will occur at a very specific time in the future.
According to Islamic belief, before the Day of Judgment arrives, all true believers will have passed away.
Only after the faithful are no longer on Earth will the final events unfold.
At that point:
- No Muslims will remain.
- The rituals of Hajj and Umrah will no longer be performed.
- The Kaaba will stand without worshippers.
Only then will the foretold destruction occur.
This explanation resolves the apparent contradiction between Allah's protection of the Kaaba and the hadith describing its eventual destruction.
Part of the Major Signs of the End Times
Islamic teachings describe both minor and major signs before the Day of Judgment.
Among the major signs are:
- The appearance of the Dajjal (Antichrist)
- The return of Prophet Isa (Jesus) عليه السلام
- The defeat of the Dajjal
- The rising of the sun from the west
- Other extraordinary events that reshape the world
After these major signs have unfolded and the believers have been taken from the Earth, the final stages leading to the Day of Judgment will begin.
It is during this period that scholars place the destruction of the Kaaba.
The Bigger Lesson
Rather than focusing solely on when or how these events will occur, Islamic scholars remind us that the purpose of these narrations is to strengthen faith and encourage preparation for the Hereafter.
The exact timing remains known only to Allah.
What matters most is living a life of faith, good deeds, and sincerity before that final day arrives.
No matter how powerful civilizations become, Islamic teachings remind us that everything in this world is temporary — and ultimately, every soul will return to its Creator.
