A major diplomatic development is putting Malaysia in the global spotlight.
Malaysia has received strong backing from several influential European leaders after Norway unexpectedly cancelled a long-standing defence agreement involving the Naval Strike Missile (NSM) system.
The incident has sparked international discussions about diplomacy, defence partnerships, and trust between nations.
Malaysia Gains Support Across Europe
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed that he immediately reached out to several European leaders to explain Malaysia's position following Norway's decision.
The response was swift.
French President Emmanuel Macron personally assured Malaysia that Norway's action did not represent the official stance of the European Union. Similar messages of support were also received from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and several leaders from Germany.
Their statements reinforced that Malaysia's diplomatic relationship with the European Union remains strong despite the dispute.
Why Was the Deal Cancelled?
Norway cited national security considerations when it halted the missile delivery in May 2026.
However, Malaysian officials questioned the explanation, pointing out that nearly the entire contract had already been paid and no detailed justification was provided for the sudden cancellation.
Prime Minister Anwar also disclosed that the United States had clarified it did not pressure or influence Norway's decision.
Malaysia Seeks RM1 Billion in Compensation
The Malaysian government is now taking legal and contractual steps to recover its losses.
According to Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, the agreement signed with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace AS includes provisions allowing Malaysia to seek compensation if the contract is breached or cannot be fulfilled.
Malaysia has officially submitted a compensation claim estimated at RM1 billion.
The original agreement, signed in 2018, was worth €124 million (approximately RM571.9 million). Reports indicate that Malaysia had already paid around 95% of the contract value before deliveries were halted.
A Test of International Trust
The cancellation has become more than just a defence procurement issue—it raises broader questions about international agreements, contractual obligations, and confidence between strategic partners.
While Norway's decision has created uncertainty, the support from key European leaders signals that Malaysia continues to enjoy strong diplomatic relationships with many nations across Europe.
