Malaysia has implemented various large-scale infrastructure projects worth billions of ringgit.

Apart from improving transportation facilities, these projects also aim to stimulate economic growth, strengthen inter-state relations and open up more development opportunities.

Here are the most expensive infrastructure projects in Malaysia.

1. East Coast Rail Link (ECRL)

ECRL costs around RM50.3 billion and is expected to be completed in 2027. This 665-kilometer route connects Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Selangor, in addition to connecting Port Klang with the East Coast.

This project is expected to speed up the movement of passengers and goods and boost trade activities.

2. MRT Putrajaya Line (MRT2)

At a cost of around RM56 billion, the MRT Putrajaya Line is one of the largest public transport projects in Malaysia.

This 57.7-kilometer route has 36 stations and connects several major areas in the Klang Valley.

This project was built to reduce road congestion and is capable of carrying hundreds of thousands of passengers every day.

3. MRT Kajang Line (MRT1)

The MRT Kajang Line is Malaysia’s first MRT project at a cost of around RM21 billion. The 51-kilometre line connects Sungai Buloh and Kajang, and became fully operational in 2017.

The project is the backbone of the country’s MRT network and plays a key role in the public transport system in the Klang Valley.

4. Pan Borneo Highway

Estimated to cost around RM29 billion, the Pan Borneo is the largest highway project in East Malaysia. The over 2,300-kilometre highway connects major cities in Sabah and Sarawak.

When fully completed, it is expected to reduce travel times and increase economic ties between areas in the two states.

5. KL–Singapore High Speed Rail (HSR)

This high-speed rail project connecting Kuala Lumpur and Singapore is estimated to cost around RM10 billion with a distance of around 350 kilometres.

Although this project was cancelled in 2021, it is still remembered as one of the most expensive transport projects ever planned in Malaysia.

Mega infrastructure projects are not only costly, but also long-term investments in national development.

The success of a project depends on its effective implementation, the benefits received by the people and its ability to generate future economic growth.
