Malaysia is increasingly gaining attention as one of the fastest growing countries in the artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor industries in Asia.

In recent years, the country has attracted billions of ringgit worth of investments from global technology companies looking to build chip manufacturing centers and data centers.

This development is driven by several factors such as a skilled workforce, lower operating costs, political stability and Malaysia's position as a neutral country in global geopolitical tensions.

In fact, some companies that originally planned to build factories in the Middle East have changed their course to Malaysia after the conflict in Iran affected their plans.

States such as Johor, Penang and Sarawak are now among the top investment destinations. Johor is attracting data center development, Penang continues to strengthen its position as a semiconductor hub, while Sarawak is receiving investments in chemical and technology-related industries.

The government is also supporting this growth through various development projects and policies that encourage investment.

International technology companies such as Nvidia, Infineon and ByteDance are among those investing in Malaysia.

The value of data centre investments approved since 2021 to the first half of 2025 reached RM144.4 billion.

This fund is expected to stimulate economic growth, increase exports and create more high-skilled job opportunities.

The increase in the number of foreign workers and visitors has boosted demand for local services, food and businesses.

With continued strong investment momentum, Malaysia is seen as well positioned to emerge as one of Asia’s most important AI and technology hubs in the future.
