Wedding costs in Malaysia are no longer just about the venue and catering. Over the past 10 years, the prices of venues, food, clothing, photography and decorations have changed, causing couples' budgets to increase.
While previously a ceremony with a budget of around RM20,000 was considered comfortable, now that amount may only be sufficient for a more modest ceremony.
2016
Budget: RM20,000 – RM35,000
Details: A medium-scale ceremony can still be held with a budget of around RM20k–RM30k, depending on the number of guests, location and catering package.
2017
Budget: RM21,000 – RM37,000
Details: The cost of catering, venue, clothing and photography has started to increase, especially in urban areas.

Details: The number of guests and the location of the ceremony are among the biggest factors that determine the overall cost.

Details: Before the pandemic, large ceremonies with more guests were increasingly the choice of couples.
2020
Budget: RM10,000 – RM25,000
Details: The COVID-19 pandemic has changed wedding trends. Ceremonies are smaller, the number of guests is limited and many couples are choosing simpler concepts.
2021
Budget: RM12,000 – RM28,000
Details: Small-scale ceremonies are still the choice due to the restrictions and uncertainty of the pandemic.
2022
Budget: RM20,000 – RM40,000
Details: Weddings are back in full swing as restrictions begin to ease. Demand for venues, caterers and wedding vendors is picking up again.
2023
Budget: RM25,000 – RM50,000
Details: Costs increase as couples return to larger events. Catering remains one of the largest components of the budget.
2024
Budget: RM28,000 – RM60,000
Details: The cost of venues, food, decorations and professional services is increasingly putting pressure on couples’ budgets.
2025
Budget: RM30,000 – RM70,000
Details: Medium to large-scale weddings can cost tens of thousands of ringgit, and even higher for hotels and premium venues.
2026
Budget: RM30,000 – RM80,000+
Details: For Malay weddings in Malaysia, current estimates are around RM30k–RM80k, while hotel or large-scale ceremonies can be much more expensive.
In the past 10 years, wedding costs have increased significantly, especially after the pandemic when large ceremonies were held again. From around RM20,000 in 2016, wedding budgets in 2026 could reach RM30,000 to RM80,000 or more.
Ultimately, the question is not just how much you are willing to spend, but whether the cost is really worth it for a couple to start their life together.
