Malaysia is increasingly seen as one of the major data centre hubs in Southeast Asia, driven by the explosion of artificial intelligence (AI), the growing use of cloud and the demand for digital infrastructure.


In fact, investment in the data centre and cloud computing sector in Malaysia has now reached RM144.4 billion for the period 2021 to mid-2025.


Johor Becomes the Main Focus

Johor is one of the most popular locations for data centre development, with about 89% of Malaysia's data centre capacity concentrated in the state.


Its proximity to Singapore is a major advantage, in addition to having more land and a growing energy and connectivity infrastructure.


Singapore has a mature technology ecosystem, but land constraints and high development costs make Malaysia, especially Johor, a more attractive alternative.


AI Needs Data Centres

The AI ​​boom is one of the main reasons for the increase in demand for data centres. AI systems require high-powered GPUs to process large amounts of data, while cloud services need to operate around the clock.


As more people use AI, digital applications and cloud services, more data needs to be processed and stored. As a result, data centres can be considered ‘AI factories’ that work 24 hours a day.


Not Just Electricity

However, building a data centre is not just about providing buildings and servers. Data centres require a stable supply of electricity because servers need to operate non-stop. Cooling systems also require water, and this requirement increases as server capacity increases.


In Q1 2026 alone, Malaysia approved investments of RM34.6 billion for 33 data centre and cloud computing projects.


These investments bring huge economic opportunities, but the question is how long can Malaysia’s electricity, water and land supply accommodate this growth?


Malaysia is now more than just building data centres. The country is building the foundations for a regional AI economy, with data as the raw material, servers as the engine and AI as the demand driver.
