The United States (US) is reportedly preparing to repatriate its diplomats from Iraq but the move is feared to provoke a war in Iraq.

According to Reuters, any move by the US to reduce its diplomatic presence in Iraq is seen as a result of tensions involving Washington's confrontation with Iran.

According to the US State Department, the withdrawal was made after several Iranian-backed groups launched rockets against the US embassy.

"The attack is not only dangerous to us but also to the Iraqi government," the department said in a statement.

US President Donald Trump recently criticized Tehran and its proxies during the election campaign.

The Iraqi people are worried that if the US insists on withdrawing its ambassador, the probability of military action by the US is high and Iraq will soon become a 'battlefield'.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has threatened to close their embassy by phone to Iraqi President Barham Salih. The conversation was reported by an Iraqi website.

Meanwhile, Iraqi leading scholar Moqtada al-Sadr called on armed groups in Iraq not to provoke any confrontation that could cause Iraq to turn into a battlefield.

Meanwhile, one Western diplomat who declined to be identified expected Washington to respond to the attack through military action.

Tensions between Iran and the US escalated after Washington killed Tehran military commander Qassem Soleimani in January in a drone strike at Baghdad International Airport. Iran responded by launching a missile at a U.S. military base in Iraq.

Over the past few weeks, rocket attacks near embassy buildings have increased and roadside bomb incidents targeted at convoys carrying weapons to US-led military alliances.
