Tensions between China and Taiwan are seen to be escalating after a fight broke out between the two countries' diplomats in Fiji.

The incident left both diplomatic officers with injuries and has asked the Fiji police to conduct an investigation.

The incident happened on October 8 when the Taiwanese trade office in Fiji held a ceremony for about 100 honored guests at the Grand Pacific Hotel.

Taiwan's foreign ministry claimed that two Chinese officials were taking pictures and trying to get information related to all the guests.

Taiwanese diplomats who asked them to leave were beaten and in need of hospital treatment for head injuries.

"We strongly condemn the actions of Chinese embassy officials in Fiji for violating the law and code of conduct," said Taiwan Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Joanne Ou.

China, meanwhile, claimed that its embassy staff were outside the council's location by carrying out unspecified 'official duties' and accused Taiwanese officials of provoking and injuring one of its diplomats.

Meanwhile, the Fiji police have not yet issued any statement regarding the incident.

The incident is seen to have worsened the situation between the two countries after Taiwan recently strengthened its ties with the United States (US).

The move angered China, which has long described Taiwan as one of its colonies.
