India and Japan have reached an agreement to cooperate in the development of 5G technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI), including sectors related to information infrastructure.

The talks were decided a day after the second Quadrilateral Foreign Minister meeting in Tokyo, involving Australian and Japanese Foreign Ministers, Indian Foreign Ministers and the United States (US) Secretary.

The meeting aims to discuss comprehensive, stable and open relations within the Indo-Pacific region.

It is said that Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and his Japanese Minister Toshimitsu Motegi have discussed efforts to strengthen the bilateral alliance to promote cooperation in capacity building, research and development, security and resilience in the information infrastructure sector, 5G, Internet of Things. IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

India, like the US, does not want to be involved in any 5G infrastructure and services from Huawei due to security concerns which are a priority of the US, United Kingdom (UK), Australia, Taiwan and several other countries.

In fact, since mid-2020 India has begun to look for alternatives to 5G services, especially when the dispute over the Ladakh border has led to restrictions on the use of Chinese technology such as mobile phone applications in the country.

There is no denying that the development of 5G technology in Japan can actually attract more technology sectors that are interested in 5G, especially the software and equipment sector in India.

The two-ministerial meeting also led to discussions on maritime security, trade and investment, the manufacturing, communications and infrastructure sectors, as well as United Nations reforms.
