British finance minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday issued a statement saying he believed if a curfew was implemented throughout the UK for the second time as a measure to curb the spread of the Covid-19 outbreak, the UK would incur enormous economic and social costs.
Sunak said, “The UK must not allow the Covid-19 pandemic to spread and at the same time the UK administration must avoid causing the NHS to become out of control. It should be understood, however, that the reality of the economic and social impact of a one-nation curfew will have a huge impact.
The UK will face greater unemployment, businesses will close and the education sector will be affected.
Boris Johnson recently introduced a three-tiered system that classifies areas in England by infection rate, to try to loosen a complex range of local bans. These measures include closing bars, restaurants, cafes, gyms and personal services such as hairdressers, and changing all university and college tuition online.
The UK is also facing a worrying spread of the Covid-19 pandemic where earlier this week alone 14,000 new infections were reported across Britain in a single day.
