Will Firefly Replace Malaysia Airlines?

Some of our generation grew up with Malaysia Airlines (MAS). However, lately there have been rumors that the airline will not be able to last long.

If so, perhaps Firefly will become a national airline to meet national transportation demands, replacing MAS.

It is understood that Khazanah Nasional Bhd believes that MAS's transition to Firefly is the last resort if negotiations to restore Malaysia Airlines with creditors and aircraft leases are not successful.

However, for now the negotiations are still ongoing and as long as no final word is reached, the next step is still not clearly drafted.

To continue connectivity, Firefly is an alternative option where Khazanah is willing to finance it to further expand its operations as a national airline.

For the record, the airline's choice is based on strong financial resources so that it can provide returns.

This means that Khazanah will stop financing Malaysia Airlines which is already financially weak, bringing more losses.

If Khazanah continues to finance MAS, Khazanah may or may not have to forget its stake in other strategic assets or increase its debt to support the airline.

Khazanah managing director Datuk Shahril Ridza Ridzuan assured that his party would take appropriate steps to reduce the negative impact if the transition really happened.
