The European Commission calls on all member states of the European Union (EU) to lift travel restrictions imposed on the United Kingdom (UK) despite concerns over the transmission of the new Covid-19 variant.
In a statement, the commission recommended that all member countries allow tourists from the UK to travel to other countries but are required to undergo a Covid-19 or self-quarantine test.
However, the commission advises that non-essential travel arrangements should be avoided.
Adding to the statement, workers in the transport sector such as truck drivers should be exempted from travel restrictions and mandatory testing.
In the UK, truck drivers are required to undergo a Covid-19 test before leaving the UK for France and other EU countries.
Meanwhile, some flights are scheduled to resume operations today for Belgians to return to their home countries from the UK but Germany is still extending its restrictions.
Currently, all 27 EU member states impose restrictions on tourists from the UK. In addition, countries such as Indian, Iran, Canada also stopped flights from the UK.
Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Oman have closed their borders completely for international tourists.
Meanwhile, the Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Europe, Hans Kluge said, EU member states will meet to discuss new strategies and limit travel but at the same time maintain trade.
