U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao on Thursday announced her resignation in protest of the Capitol riots and violence.
According to Bernama, he was the first cabinet member of President Donald Trump's administration to step down following the incident on Wednesday at the local time.
His resignation takes effect on Monday next week.
"Yesterday, our country experienced an event that caused trauma and was inevitable when supporters of the President stormed the Capitol. I am sure many people are experiencing the same thing, the situation is very bothering me, "he said.
Chao, 67, has held the portfolio since 2017.
In the incident, Trump's loyal supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol building after Trump delivered a fiery speech to tens of thousands of his supporters near the White House, killing four people.
Trump in his speech refused to give in and called on his supporters to continue fighting to avoid 'stolen' election results, claiming there was a lot of vote fraud, allegations that election officials denied.
He, however, said he would hand over his power in an orderly manner to Joe Biden on January 20.
