The European Union on Wednesday issued a statement further straining diplomatic relations between the EU and the UK. The EU threatened to ban the export of Covid-19 vaccine to Britain to protect the limited doses of the vaccine for their citizens. This is in a form of preparation for the third wave of pandemic and plans to open tourism this summer.
Now the EU has recorded a total of 550,000 Covid-19-related deaths. European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen says the epidemiological situation is deteriorating in the EU.
He added that the EU is now in the phase of the biggest crisis of the century. There is an expectation that the third wave of Covid-19 will reach peak levels, hence the process of accelerating vaccination is a priority.
Leyen also said that vaccine distribution from the United States was running smoothly although there was a shortage of vaccine deliveries from AstraZeneca as well as from Britain.
This has further strained diplomatic relations between the two blocs. In addition, the recent statement that the European Union (EU) will take legal action against the UK over its move to change the terms of the Northern Ireland Protocol.
